A Light in the Darkness: Why CASA Volunteer Derrick Finley Chose to Serve

Derrick Finley has been a dedicated CASA volunteer advocate for children since 2021.

At CASA of the River Region, our volunteers are the heart of our mission. They are compassionate advocates who walk alongside children and families during some of the most challenging times in their lives. One of those dedicated advocates is Derrick Finley, who has been serving as a CASA volunteer since 2021.

Derrick’s motivation for stepping into this vital role came from a place of service and professional growth.

“I chose to be a CASA to keep up my skills in social work by helping children in need, including their families,” Derrick shares. “I enjoy seeing the progress that’s made—not just in the children, but in their families as well.”

That desire to support healing and change lies at the core of CASA’s mission. Our volunteers do more than attend court hearings—they are consistent, trusted adults who monitor the child’s well-being, support educational goals, connect families to services, and advocate for safety and stability.

For Derrick, one of the most meaningful aspects of his work has been the strong partnership he has with his CASA supervisor.

“There are so many favorite memories, but what stands out most is the teamwork between myself and my CASA supervisor. Every case comes with its challenges, but I’ve always felt respected and supported. She trusts my judgment, and that means everything in this work.”

That kind of mutual trust and collaboration is what enables CASA volunteers like Derrick to advocate effectively and confidently in court and in the community.

“I really do care about everyone. And if I can help just one person in this lifetime—if I can help someone out of the darkness and into the light—then it’s been a good life.”

Since 2021, Derrick has been doing just that—shining a light for the children he serves and ensuring they are seen, heard, and supported.

Inspired by Derrick’s story? Nearly 200 children in our region are waiting for someone who cares to step up and advocate for them.

Hey folks! I brought the basic strategy chart to a Blackjack table and promised to follow it—no gut detours. A few hands dipped, then the math evened things out. Midway I marked spinmama to recreate the layout later. I finished a touch up and, more importantly, clear-headed. That’s my worldwide standard now: if I can close with the same mindset I started with, the session’s a win regardless of the exact number.
