When Sean Muldoon first heard about CASA of the River Region on NPR back in 2019, he admits he didn’t fully grasp the depth of child abuse and neglect in Kentucky. But as he paid closer attention to the stories and statistics, something clicked. He realized he could make a tangible difference—and decided to become a CASA volunteer.
“I left every visit thinking that this kid’s day is better because I stopped by, and maybe his life will be better too,” Sean reflects. His words capture the heart of CASA’s mission: giving every child a voice and a champion in court, someone who is committed to their safety, well-being, and future.
Being a CASA volunteer isn’t always easy. Sean recalls one case where the child’s caretaker was initially suspicious, unsure about his role. But Sean’s patience and consistent presence helped build trust. “Little by little, she learned that I wasn’t a threat and that I was there to help the young boy. Finally, she said something like, ‘I’m glad he has you,’” he says. That simple acknowledgment—earned through dedication—was a small but meaningful victory on many fronts.
For Sean, that is exactly why he continues with CASA. “It’s one of the highlights of my week,” he shares. Every visit, every conversation, every effort matters—and cumulatively, they help create brighter futures for children who have already faced too much.
You Can Make a Difference Too
Nearly 200 children across Jefferson, Bullitt, Shelby, Spencer, Henry, Oldham, and Trimble Counties are waiting for a caring adult to step in as a CASA volunteer. These children need someone to be their voice, to advocate for their best interests, and to provide the stability and guidance every child deserves. You don’t need special experience—just compassion, commitment, and the willingness to show up.
Volunteers like Sean remind us that one person’s dedication can truly change a child’s story. Visit www.casariverregion.org/volunteer to learn more and apply today. Help a child in your community find hope, safety, and a brighter future.
