Filling the Gap This Summer: Resources and Support for Children and Families

Summer resources for children in KY

School is out and summer has officially begun. For many families, this season brings vacations, celebrations, and extra time together. For others, it can create challenges as familiar routines disappear and families work to fill the gaps left when school is not in session.

Research shows that changes in routine can affect children's mental, emotional, and physical well-being. School provides much more than education. It offers structure, social connection, access to meals, supportive adults, and opportunities for growth. When those supports are temporarily unavailable, some children and families may need additional assistance.

For children who have experienced abuse or neglect, these disruptions can be especially difficult. Consistency, connection, and support are critical protective factors that help children feel safe and secure.

Fortunately, communities throughout CASA of the River Region's seven-county service area offer resources that can help families navigate the summer months and access the support they need.

How CASA Helps

CASA Volunteer Advocates know that children need more than a voice in court. They need consistent support and strong connections to the people, services, and opportunities that help them thrive.

Throughout the year, CASA volunteers build relationships with children, caregivers, schools, service providers, and healthcare professionals. They help identify unmet needs, advocate for services, and ensure children's best interests remain at the center of decision-making.

During the summer months, this can include helping families learn about meal programs, summer activities, reading programs, community services, and other resources that support a child's well-being.

While summer break lasts only a few months, many children in the child welfare system experience uncertainty and change for much longer. CASA volunteers provide a consistent, caring presence throughout those transitions.

Working Together for Children

No single organization can meet every need a child or family may face. That is why CASA works closely with schools, community agencies, healthcare providers, nonprofits, and local partners throughout our service area.

CASA provides ongoing training and support to Volunteer Advocates so they can better understand available resources and help connect children and caregivers to the services they need. Whether a family needs food assistance, educational support, counseling, healthcare services, housing resources, or enrichment opportunities, CASA volunteers can help identify resources and advocate for access. Our volunteers do not provide these services themselves. Instead, they help ensure that children and families are connected to the people and organizations best positioned to help. When community partners, caregivers, service providers, and CASA volunteers work together, children are more likely to receive the support they need to heal, grow, and thrive.

Summer Resources for Families

Cultural Pass (Jefferson and Bullitt Counties)

A fantastic summer opportunity available to local families is the Fund for the Arts Cultural Pass Program. The Cultural Pass provides free access to cultural and engaging community events and destinations including the Belle of Louisville Riverboats, Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Louisville Zoo, and much more. This program is offered to children and young adults from ages 0–21. One accompanying adult may also attend for free.

Summer Reading Programs

Local libraries throughout our service area offer summer reading programs that encourage children to continue learning while school is out. Many programs include special events, activities, and prizes that make reading fun while helping prevent summer learning loss.

Families can check with their local public library for available programs, including the Louisville Free Public Library Summer Reading Program and the Bullitt County Public Library Summer Quest Program.

Summer Meal Programs

Several school districts and community organizations provide free meals to children throughout the summer, including:

These programs help ensure children continue to have access to nutritious meals while school is not in session.

Community Assistance Resources

Families seeking additional support may benefit from organizations throughout our seven-county service area, including:

Opportunities for Teens and Young Adults

Young adults ages 16–24 looking for career exploration, job training, educational support, leadership development, and other opportunities can connect with The Spot: Young Adult Opportunity Center.

Standing in the Gap for Children

Community resources can make a tremendous difference for families, but knowing where to turn is often the hardest part. CASA volunteers help bridge that gap by building trusted relationships, identifying needs, and connecting families with available support.

For children who have experienced abuse or neglect, having one consistent adult advocate can make all the difference. When that advocacy is combined with strong community partnerships and accessible resources, children are better positioned to experience safety, stability, and hope for the future.

Every child deserves a safe, healthy, and enriching summer. By working together, community organizations, schools, service providers, caregivers, and CASA volunteers can help ensure children have access to the opportunities and support they need. We are all stronger when we work together on behalf of children.
