David Kirsch Brings Experience and Compassion to CASA Volunteer Advocacy

Since 2023, David Kirsh, a retired family law attorney, has served as a volunteer advocate with CASA of the River Region—providing a steady, caring voice for children affected by abuse and neglect.

Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Kirsh practiced family law in Illinois and Colorado, handling divorce, custody, domestic violence, and mediation cases. Beginning in the mid-1980s, he also volunteered with attorney assistance programs, supporting lawyers whose mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or personal crises threatened their careers and families. Through peer support, intervention training, and resource coordination, Kirsh saw firsthand how addressing these challenges can stabilize families and change lives.

That experience now informs his work as a CASA volunteer. In this role, Kirsh builds trust with children, monitors their safety and well-being, and helps ensure their needs are clearly communicated to the court and service providers. One of the most meaningful moments for him was the first time a young child hugged him—a quiet but powerful reminder of how much consistent, compassionate presence can matter.

While Kirsh brings extensive legal experience, CASA emphasizes that no legal or child welfare background is required to volunteer. CASA provides comprehensive training and ongoing support, making it possible for people from all walks of life to step into this critical role. Training options are now more flexible than ever and include two in-person sessions, three online sessions, and flexible self-paced learning.

CASA will continue hosting in-person training at its main office on the Kosair for Kids campus off Eastern Parkway in Louisville. In addition, CASA is excited to expand access by offering new in-person training sessions beginning in February at the Bullitt County office in the Hillview Resource Center.

CASA is currently seeking additional volunteers in Bullitt County and throughout the region to meet growing community need. Volunteers serve as a consistent adult presence for children navigating some of the most challenging moments of their lives—helping ensure they are safe, supported, and heard.

CASA volunteers like David Kirsh demonstrate that one committed adult can make a lasting difference. Those interested in becoming a voice for a child and offering hope when it is needed most can learn more at www.casarr.org/volunteer.
