On Tuesday, April 21, CASA of the River Region was honored to celebrate the heart of our mission—our volunteers—at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held at Woodhaven Country Club.

More than 130 CASA volunteer advocates, Family Court Judges, board members, staff, and special guests gathered for an evening of connection, gratitude, and reflection. Together, we shared a meal and recognized the extraordinary commitment our volunteers make to children in our community who have experienced abuse and neglect.
Family Court Judge Shelley Santry offered meaningful remarks from the bench, providing insight into the vital role CASA volunteers play in the courtroom. Her perspective underscored just how impactful a consistent, informed advocate can be in the life of a child navigating the court system.
Interim Executive Director Tara M. Brown and Board Chair Bryan Sisto also addressed attendees, highlighting the dedication, compassion, and reliability that define CASA volunteers, emphasizing that CASA’s work is only possible because of individuals who choose to step forward and serve.

The evening also included special recognition of volunteers who went above and beyond this year—those who completed 12 or more hours of continuing education and/or dedicated over 100 hours of service advocating for children. These milestones reflect not only time given, but a deep commitment to learning and showing up for children in meaningful ways.
In addition, we were proud to present this year’s CASA All-Star Awards. Nominated by staff and approved by our Board of Directors, these awards honor volunteers who exemplify excellence in advocacy:
Limitless Enthusiast: David Hopkins
Community Connector: Phyllis Broughton
Tough Case Navigator: Jamie Jarecki
Unsung Hero: Nancy Minyard
A special recognition was also given to Tracy Kennedy, recipient of the Lifelong Learner Award, for completing an incredible 41 hours of continuing education in just one year.

While April is nationally recognized as Volunteer Appreciation Month, at CASA, we celebrate our volunteers every day. Their dedication ensures that children facing difficult circumstances have a voice, a consistent presence, and someone advocating for their best interests.
CASA of the River Region simply could not fulfill its mission without the passion and commitment of its volunteers. We are deeply grateful for each individual who chooses to stand up for a child—and we are proud to celebrate them.
