Foster Care & Adoption Information

As the opioid crisis continues, more and more children are entering foster care which means there is an ever growing need for foster homes.

If people are interested in becoming foster parents, they can attend an information meeting hosted by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Reservations are not needed to attend. If people are married or have a live in significant other, both individuals need to attend the information meeting. Also, anyone in the home 18 or older must also attend the information meeting.

Meetings last two hours and are offered 4 times a month in different locations. To become a foster parent(s), a person(s) has must:

  • Be at least 21 years old; can be married or single;

  • Be financially stable with an income sufficient to meet the family’s needs; t

  • Provide a safe, secure and healthy home for a child(ren)

  • Be in good physical and mental health;

  • Complete criminal background checks including FBI, sex offender registry and a check of the child abuse registry;

  • Complete training to understand the needs of children in foster care.

Benefits to foster parents include:

  • Financial assistance in the form of a daily rate;

  • Medical coverage for the children;

  • Daycare assistance for working parents;

  • Other assistance provided to meet the specialized needs of children on a case by case basis.

Kentucky offers:

  • Foster and adoptive training support network;

  • Foster parent mentoring program;

  • Adoption support.

Foster Parent Training consists of:

  • 15 hours of in class training

  • 15 hours on line training

  • A minimum of six (6) hours of ongoing training each year.
